Attic Insulation
Attic Insulation – The first step in Home Energy Efficiency Improvements.
When combined with attic air sealing, Attic Insulation is typically the “low hanging fruit” of improving your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Attics can by 140 deg. in summer months and insulation acts as a barrier to protect the house from the outside. Insulation is measured in R-value and an attic is recommended to have R-38 in the southeast. That is typically 14”-15” of blown insulation and many homes have half that amount or less.
Types of Insulation:
- Blown-in insulation. The most common attic insulation in the southeast is blown-in insulation, also called loose fill, and is typically either Cellulose or Fiberglass. This material is cost effective as a retrofit and convenient to install.
- Batt fiberglass insulation. Batt insulation comes in different R-values but should not be installed over loose fill.
